What's Up in SD? Special Events Calendar - February 2010

Anya Marina
February 20. 8:30pm. Casbah. 2501 Kettner Blvd., San Diego.  We love the Casbah because it’s such an underestimated, intimate venue – the perfect place to get up-close-and-personal to your favorite bands.  And the drinks are pretty reasonably priced.  This month, pleasepleaseplease check out homegrown heroine Anya Marina.  The stunning singer-songwriter will woo you with her acoustic indie rock. Bonus: Wire Pony is set to open.  Sorry kids, 21+ with ID.  619-232-HELL. casbahmusic.com.
Wheelchair Accessible.

Cirque du Soleil KOOZA
February 25 – March 14. Grand Chapiteau, Del Mar Fairgrounds. 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar.  If you’ve ever had the dream of experiencing Cirque du Soleil, there is no better time than now. KOOZA is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil, combining two circus traditions: acrobatics and the art of clowning.  The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility, presented in a colorful mélange of bold slapstick humor.  We dare you to not be completely enamored.  P.S. The three female contortionists will blow your mind.  Seriously.  800-450-1480. cirquedusoleil.com/kooza.
Wheelchair Accessible.

The Science of… Aliens
Daily. San Diego Air and Space Museum, Balboa Park. 2001 Pan American Plaza, San Diego.  Follow SDASM on a journey through the real science of alien life and into the furthest reaches of your imagination.  Get up-close-and-personal with some classic science fiction films and props, then come face-to-face with the weird creatures that inhabit Earth, before exploring far-flung planets and stars.  619-234-8291. sandiegoairandspace.org.
Wheelchair Accessible.

Whale and Dolphin Watching
Through April 4. Hornblower Cruises and Events. 1066 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego.  Spend whale-watching season with Hornblower Cruises and Events.  Annually, approximately 28,000 gray whales pass by the San Diego coast.  Treat yourself to the awe-inspiring sight of these majestic giants while aboard a comfortable yacht.  Each 3.5-hour whale-watching adventure is narrated by an experienced captain with information exclusively endorsed by the San Diego Natural History Museum.  Other wildlife, like sea lions, blue herons and three kinds of dolphins almost always put in appearances.  619-725-8888. hornblower.com.
