Heat Up Your Spring in San Diego

Anja Brydum

It might be spring, but that doesn't mean a whole lot to Californians.  Especially Southern Californians.  Here in San Diego, in the southwest corner of SoCal, we’re only 20 miles north of Baja. So when the rest of the country gets those elusive April showers and May flowers, we're pretty much enjoying a perpetual summer.

Escape to Julian
About an hour east of downtown SD, within San Diego County, you’ll find Julian.  A visit to this quaint mountain community will transport you back to simpler times.  The history here is rich and far-removed from the hectic rush of city life.  It’s the perfect place to pretend you’re on summer vacation.  Stuck sweetly within the Cuyamaca Mountains, Julian was born from the gold rush during the 1870s.  Its charms are sparkling.  Just like gold.  760-765-1857.  www.julianca.com.

Explore Mexico
It’s only a quick trip from San Diego, but once you’ve crossed into Mexico you’ve entered a whole new world.  For a quick getaway, try Tijuana. If you have the time to venture a little further, Rosarito Beach is the perfect place to escape your everyday routine.  Take a tip from those in-the-know and explore the Rosarito Beach Hotel, where Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio filmed the smash-hit Titanic.  Horseback ride in the surf, golf, enjoy the nightlife or just laze the day away in the sun on a beach lounge.  Tempted?  800-44-MEXICO.  www.visitmexico.com.

Embrace the Desert
Some like it hot.  And some like it really hot.  What better way to forget the blues of the approaching holidays than a surreal trip to magnificent Anza-Borrego Desert State Park?  This park – the largest state park in the contiguous United States – is located about two hours from downtown SD, on the eastern side of San Diego County.  With 500 miles of dirt roads, 12 wilderness areas and miles upon miles of hiking trails, Anza-Borrego is the ideal locale for forgetting all your worries. From washes to wildflowers, palm groves to cacti, you’ll melt for these sweeping vistas.  760-767-5311.  www.park.ca.gov

Whatever you choose to do, we’re glad you’re here.  This is San Diego.  And we’ve got a little sunshine to share.
